『空虚は出来事であり方法である。それは、たとえば空（くう）のように、信じられたりじられなかったりするようなものではない。それはそれ自身によって満たされた自紙状態（タブラ・ラサ）として働く。同じように、真空も我々の時代においてはそれ自身によって満たされており、見分けにくいものによってできている。《私》はひとつの時空をかたちづくる。種全体によって抹殺されたり消尽されたりするひとつの時空を。』
本書はは、空虚、空間、エネルギー、感覚について詩的な考察を通じて、アーティスト兼建築家のデュオである荒川修作とマドリン・ギンズが、死を人間の存在における避けられない条件として受け入れるべきではないと提唱した、短い哲学的マニフェストであり、この著作は、二人の後の「天命反転」哲学の基礎を築いたものである。
“Blank is an event and a method. It is unlike Emptiness, for example, not something to be believed in or not. It provides the tabula rasa with a fullness of its own. Similarly the Vacuum, in our time, has a fullness of its own, and that, too, is composed of indiscernibles.”
Through poetic reflections on emptiness, space, energy, and sensation, To Not to Die is a short philosophical manifesto in which the artist and architect duo Shusaku Arakawa and Madeline Gins postulate that death should not be accepted as an inevitable condition of human existence, laying the foundation for the duo's later "Reversible Destiny" philosophy.
