本書は、 東京都写真美術館（1997年1月9日～2月28日）と 北海道立函館美術館　（1997年4月5日～5月11日）で開催された展覧会『寫眞渡来のころ』の展覧会図録です。本展では、19世紀半ばに写真が日本に伝来した経緯を探り、外国との交流を通じた伝来と、 下岡蓮杖、 島霞谷、 横山松三郎といった日本人写真家による初期の採用をたどった。また、江戸時代後期から明治時代初期にかけて、写真が日本社会に浸透していく過程で生じた技術的、文化的、芸術的な変革に焦点を当てた。

Official catalog of the exhibition The Advent of Photography that took place at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography (Jan 9-Feb 28, 1997) and the Hakodate Museum of Art (April 5-May 11, 1997). The exhibition explored how photography was introduced to Japan in the mid-19th century, tracing its arrival through foreign contacts and its early adoption by Japanese practitioners, namely SHIMOOKA Renjo, SHIMA Kakoku, and YOKOYAMA Matsusaburo. It focused on the technological, cultural, and artistic transformations that accompanied photography’s integration into Japanese society during the late Edo and early Meiji periods.
