(from inside cover) Wild in the Streets: The Sixties is a collaborative project by Dan Graham and Marie-Paule Macdonald. It was originally planned in 1987 for the Monnaie Opera in Brussels, in cooperation with the Belgian Flemish Television, as an opera-event with simultaneous television coverage. Visual artists were meant to relate to the opera building and to the television medium as to a sequence of extensions. Dan Graham has always utilized the notion of extension. In his own words: "I enjoy that closeness where I take two things that are very close and just slightly overlap them." He continually pulls things together: opera and rock, the proscenium and the television, the sixties and the eighties, Graham and Macdonald, and, now, an opera project in the form of a book. At the same time, he deliberately keeps the elements separated in order to demonstrate how they overlap. This allows Graham to substitute the object and the subject in the relationship between the viewer and the art. With its political commentary couched in a bed of situations bordering on the burlesque, Wild in the Streets: The Sixties fits perfectly into the rich tradition of opera. Graham's work exhibits an exceptional ability to speak to its times.
