Christo, who first came to Japan in 1969, focused on the differences in the use of space between Japan and the West and conceived "Umbrellas: A Joint Project for Japan and the United States." This book introduces the project, in which thousands of umbrellas are deployed over a distance of several dozen kilometers in both Japan and the United States, and archives various aspects of Christo's work, including his important material, "fabric," "location," and the process of obtaining "permission" to realize the project.

Manuscript by Tsutomu Noma, Masahiko Yanagi, and Kazuhiko Saya (afterword), Includes notes by Christo.
